Hickory

The Bold and the Sturdy

Hickory is a uniquely charming timber that makes it perfect for any setting from modern city living to the rugged country lifestyle.

The heartwood is a pale brown to caramel colour. Sapwood is white but not prevalent in our Hickory flooring.

Native to the eastern States of America, Hickory is a dense and hard wearing timber that makes it the ideal flooring both at home and in commercial environments.

Premium

Our Premium grade is predominately clean and has the most consistent colour across the timber.

Limited Pin Knots, Twig Knots, Bird Pecks, and Mineral Streaks

Small quantities of sapwood are permitted.

Rustic

Our Rustic grade has all the natural features that makes solid timber a wholly unique and beautiful flooring option.

All knot sizes, character markings and splits/cracks are permitted as long as they are fillable.

Greater mix of heartwood and lighter sapwood.

What makes our Hickory different?

The Hickory we import is known as ‘brown’ Hickory. It mostly consists of the stunning pale brown to caramel coloured heartwood.

This should not be confused with ‘calico’ Hickory which has a striking contrast of the heartwood and white sapwood intermingled throughout the timber.

Products

Hickory as an alternative to Blackbutt

We believe that Hickory is a genuine alternative to Blackbutt for interior applications.

Both timbers are strong and durable (Blackbutt is 900 kg/m3 and Hickory 805 kg/m3), both have a caramel to pale brown appearance, both are excellent options for flooring, parquet, lining, benchtops, mouldings and joinery timber.

The big difference is price and availability. Australia has an ever-diminishing supply of Blackbutt which has the effect of pushing the price up. However, Hickory is readily available and more affordable than both Tasmanian Oak and Blackbutt.
